Serving Individuals and Communities in Kern County

According to County Health Rankings & Roadmap:

  • Kern County’s 2019 median household income was 30.5% less than the state median household income.
  • Kern county food insecurity rate is 13%.
  • 31% of Kern County adults are obese.
  • Kern’s 23% physical inactivity rate was higher than California’s (17%).
    Increased physical activity is associated with lower risks of type 2 diabetes, cancer, stroke, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and premature mortality, independent of obesity.

The NFCS Advisor answers questions regarding food safety and food preservation. Educational programs reach targeted audiences through meetings, workshops, seminars, symposia, newsletters and mass media.

CalFresh Healthy Living the University of California (CFHL-UC)

CFHL-UC teach people eligible for SNAP about good nutrition, how to make their food dollars stretch further, and how to be physically active at any age.  Effective, evidenced-based nutrition education and physical activity classes are aligned with policy, systems and environmental change strategies to create long lasting community change. Our mission is to inspire and empower under-served Californians to improve their health by promoting awareness, education, and community change through diverse partnerships, resulting in healthy eating and active living.

Evidenced based curriculums used:

  • Plan, Shop, Save and Cook (PSSC) - helps you learn how to plan meals for your family and write shopping lists to save money and time. Learn to choose foods that are the most nutritious and that fit within your budget. Learn techniques to lower your food bill and stretch your money. Learn how to use unit pricing, review bulk and generic products, and how to keep your food safe to prevent waste and spoilage. Discover tips to help you plan nutritious meals for an entire week and taste a healthy, low-cost recipe.
  • Making Every Dollar Count (MEDC) - the program gives you the tools you need to help you gain control of your money.
  • Healthy, Happy Families (HHF) - a curriculum designed to supplement a nutrition education program for parents. The curriculum is composed of four mini-lessons to help parents promote healthy eating habits in preschool-aged children.   
  • Eat Healthy, Be Active Community (EHBA) Workshops - is based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010and 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The series builds on concepts by providing detailed tips for how to put recommended behaviors into practice. The workshops are designed to move participants from the "thinking" phase to taking desired health actions.
  • Coordinated Approach to Child Health Early Child Education - designed to nurture a love of physical activity, introduce classroom-based gardening and nutrition, and encourage healthy eating in children ages 3-5.

Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

EFNEP assist low-income youth and families with young children to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and changed behavior necessary to choose nutritionally sound diets and to contribute to their personal development and the improvement of total family diet and nutritional welfare. Nutrition educators empower participants to adopt healthy lifestyle practices. The goals include providing information about food choices for healthy living and reduced risk for chronic diseases, safe food handling, storage and preparation, and making the most of resources to feed the family. For both adults and youth, the lessons are learner-centered with activities for practicing newly learned healthy living skills and physical activities.

Adult Curriculums:

  • Eating Smart, Being Active - Nutrition education and obesity prevention curriculum

Youth Curriculums:

  • Happy Healthy Me (Kinder) - is a nutrition and literacy curriculum that helps children become aware of food and nutrition by reading storybooks with food-related themes and then participating in hands-on nutrition education and physical activities.
  • My Amazing Body (1st grade) - a nutrition curriculum that helps students learn about the amazing things their body can do and explore how they can keep their amazing bodies healthy through eating nutrient-rich foods, getting plenty of exercise and sleep, and practicing good hygiene.
  • Good for Me and You (2nd grade) - a nutrition curriculum for students to explore what is good for a healthy body and lifestyle, study My Plate, and are introduced to the concept of nutrients and what they do for their bodies. They learn that eating breakfast every day, drinking healthy beverages, exercising and keeping foods safe to eat all are good for their body.
  • It's My Choice...Eat Right! Be Active! (3rd grade) - is a nutrition curriculum that helps students examine the key nutrients provided by each of the five food groups of MyPlate and learn how to make healthy choices. They identify how vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, and proteins provide the essential building blocks needed for good health.
  • Nutrition to Grow On (4-6th grade) - to teach children and their families about nutrition by relating each lesson to a garden activity. The curriculum uses the garden to integrate disciplines, including science, mathematics, language arts, history, environmental studies, nutrition and health, while reinforcing the California academic content standards.
  • EatFit (Jr High) - teach students to set goals to establish the personal health habits appropriate to the changing needs of adolescence. Students explore and practice the skills necessary for a physically active lifestyle and healthy food choices.
  • Hunger Attack! (9-12th grade) - a curriculum designed to teach teens that the food they buy not only affects the amount of money they spend, but can also affect their health.
